the Self-managed Journey and are ready to take further action. |
This page is organized by the following
FAQ. They are not an essential part of the
Self-Managed Journey. It's up to you whether or not you have a look
at them now, later or not at all. The questions are listed first
and then the questions with their answers follow.

you have other questions or comments on the material here, please
consider giving us feedback.

Q2: I have gone through all the steps in the
Self-Managed Journey and I still have attentional symptoms, what
should I do next?
A:
If you have gone through all five steps of the Self-Managed Journey
and you and your helper have redone the Screening Checklist for
Attentional Concerns and you STILL have attentional concerns,
you have various options. They are outlined below. See what feels
right to you. If you can't decide, and need some help, I invite
you to call for a brief consultation. Talk
with Dr. Teeya.
Remember: Just because you have 4 to 5 checkmarks
in the Pretty Much to Very Much columns, doesn't mean that you
have AD/HD. There can be many different causes. It may be time
to consult a professional to assist you in the diagnostic process.
You may wish to go directly to your family
physician and explain the steps you have taken. See if s/he can
make a diagnosis of AD/HD or refer you to someone who can.
Q3: I have gone through all the steps, have been diagnosed with
AD/HD and want to try an approach to medication that minimizes side
effects. What shall I do?
A:
If you have received an official diagnosis of AD/HD and wish to
try medication to see if it helps, encourage your physician to
use the Farrelly
Protocol for a Medication Trial. This is a very prudent protocol
and minimizes the chances of side effects. Be sure to complete
a Screening
Checklist for Attentional Concerns every day of the three-week
medication trial. This will allow you and your physician to determine
whether or not there is a positive response to this medication
AND to determine the lowest dose that gives the maximum payoff.
Using this approach to medication also reduces the chances of
side effects. If you have any questions about this, feel free
to contact me.
Q4: I have gone through all the steps, have been diagnosed with
AD/HD and want to try some natural approaches to treatment. What
shall I do?
A:
If you would rather explore more natural means for treating your
AD/HD, try using some nutriceutical supplements (e.g., Efalex
Focus, Phytobears or Mannabars from the Mannatech company). Your
local health food store will be up-to-date on other reliable products
on the market. Remember that we are unique in our physical make-up
and you won't know until you try what may or may not be good for
you.
There are many wonderful healing techniques
available. These can help to reduce levels of stress and enhance
your ability to cope with whatever challenges you are facing.
Some of these include Massage, EMF Balancing Technique, Cranial-Sacral
Therapy, Educational Kinesiology. I encourage you to do some research
on the Internet or talk to someone you trust in the field. Select
an option that seems appropriate and see if it helps (e.g. All About Natural Health).
Q5: I have heard that you take a positive approach to AD/HD, what
is the "Good News about A.D.D."?
A:
Acceptance is a key ingredient to being the best you can be. Having
a positive attitude is even better. If you are interested, here
is some "Good
News about A.D.D.". Also, if you have a 6-12 year old
child who has been diagnosed with AD/HD, s/he might enjoy this
little book that explains about the advantages of having Attention
Deluxe Dimension (This is what I call ADD). Kids love hearing
about how to be the "best they can be as naturally as possible
in mind, body, and spirit"

Q6: What do you recommend
for behavior management?
A: If
you are dealing with behavior problems you may wish to learn Riding
the Wave. This is a powerful behavior management technique that
I have used with my own children and taught to many parents and
teachers. It was developed specifically for those with attentional
concerns. It has been shown to result in increased self-control,
motivation, self-esteem. It works for children, adolescents and
even adults and can be used by parents, partners, teachers and
therapists. See Resources
Q7: How can I learn more about
attention and how it affects the way my brain works?
A:
If you want to learn more details about how the brain works and
get more ideas about what you might be able to do to help build
attention, see Dr. Mel Levine's wonderful site All
Kind of Minds.
Q8: Where can I get ongoing
support for the issues I am facing?
A: If
you would like to find out if there are support groups close to
where you live, visit CHADD
(Children and Adults With AD/HD).
You may you may wish to seek direct professional
assistance from a psychologist who specializes in the assessment
and treatment of AD/HD. Contact Us.
Q9: Can you give me an
example of how this method works?
A:
If you need a concrete example of how the Empowerment Plus process
works in addressing concerns in the areas of attention, learning
and behavior, have a look at Captain
Chaos gains Self-Control.
